Member update - January 5, 2009

Welcome to 2009. We hope your winter break afforded you time for relaxation, rejuvenation, and some celebration. We look to 2009 with optimism and hope for the success for all of our students. We have a new contract, a new U.S. President, and a new majority in the state House of Representatives. Let’s hope for new solutions to our ailing economy.

Reminder # 1.  January 15th is the deadlines for submitting transcripts or verification of course work for salary credit to apply for the second semester of this school year which begins January 20th.

Reminder #2 Tax Break. Don’t forget that the IRS allows for a special tax break for teachers. You can continue to take an above-the-line deduction of up to $250 for expenses for books, supplies, computer equipment, and supplementary materials. You don’t have to itemize. However, if you spend more than $250, any excess may be included as part of your miscellaneous itemized deductions.

Reminder #3 Union Banquet. Please mark your calendars. Our annual Union banquet will be held on Friday, April 17th. We selected an earlier date to avoid conflicts with events such as proms, graduations, Mothers’ Day, and the Kentucky Derby. Please save the date.

Fraternally,
Tom Schmida, President
