April 20, 2009 - Scholarships and Awards

Tom Mooney Scholarship. OFT sent us the following information on the Tom Mooney Memorial Scholarship:

The Tom Mooney Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee is taking applications through April 30 for this year's $2,000 college scholarship. Applications are available on the OFT website www.oft-aft.org.  The Tom Mooney Memorial Scholarship Fund provides a scholarship to the child of an OFT member who is a graduating senior of a public high school planning to study education, political science, history or labor.

Speaking of Scholarships… The gift basket raffle at the Union Banquet last Friday raised over $1200.00 which is allocated for our Local 795 Glenn Altschuld Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Heights High senior who has a record of outstanding academic performance and who desires to pursue a career in teaching. The recipient is selected by our high school Union stewards and officers. Special thanks to all the members who contributed items for the gift baskets. The raffle was a stunning success.

Friend of the Heights Schools Award.  A long-time Heights Schools advocate and community activist, Lita Gonzalez was the recipient of our Union’s Friend of the Heights Schools Award at our banquet. Lita is a tireless proponent of the CH-UH Schools. One of her many accomplishments is the creation of the PATH program to bring parents of prospective students into our schools .

Ellen Krebs Award. High School Guidance Counselor and Local 795 3rd Vice president Mary Ann Brennan was the winner of this year’s Ellen Krebs award. This annual award is presented to a CHTU member and activist for distinguished service to the students of our District. Congratulations, Mary Ann.
