Next week we return to work after what seems like the shortest summer on record.  Before we begin, we wanted to share some important information about the opening of the school year.

Schedule

August 8th

Have you voted yet or do you plan on voting August 8th?  If the answer is: “Yes, and I’m voting No”, you can stop reading now. For all other CHTU members, please make sure you vote No on Issue 1, August 8th. Issue 1, if passed, will have a devastating impact on Ohio and the future of this state. If you are living under a rock and have no idea what I am talking about please click here to read more about Issue 1 and its harmful results.

Dear Colleagues,

Years ago when I was a union steward at the high school, I put together a chart that listed offenses by students and what consequences teachers should recommend on a referral.  There was a range of choices for each infraction. I thought it made sense to have some teacher consistency in recommendations for how administration would deal with the students.  Administration refused to use the chart at all citing the need for administrative flexibility in dealing with student misbehavior.

Year later we have now been ordered by the Office of Civil Rights to change our entire student

Dear Colleagues,
Thanks to Yvonne Wallace, whose name I left out of our efforts to register voters!

Yesterday Cleveland.com published an article by Rich Exner that shows that Ohio School Report Cards trend with district income.  He showed this for each grade in the report card and each section of the report card.  Could there be a link between income and success on the school report card?  Methinks so.  (Link)

Dear Colleagues,

A little over a week ago I found myself in a meeting called by our state Rep. Janine Boyd that allowed the State Superintendent of Schools for Ohio, Paulo DeMaria to meet the new superintendents from CHUH and Shaker.  The CEO of Cleveland Metropolitan Schools attended as well as our State Board of Education Member from this region and good friend Meryl Johnson.  State Senator Williams was also with us.  Rep. Boyd's aide Ethan Goodman attended as well as two aides for Supt DeMaria.  I was the only other attendee.
When I got into teaching this is not the type of meeting I ever

Dear Colleagues,

We were just informed that former Cleveland Heights Teachers Union President Glenn Altschuld passed away.  Glenn served as President of Local 795 from 1970 to 1990. During his tenure in office, CHTU became the exclusive bargaining agent for teachers and support staff in CH-UH.  Throughout his presidency, Glenn was relentless in negotiating contracts that secured fair wages, excellent benefits and optimal working conditions. In addition, he served in key leadership positions with the Ohio Federation of Teachers, the American Federation of Teachers and the AFL-CIO.   Glenn was
