CHTU Update - 8.6.18 End of Summer

Dear Colleagues,

If I didn’t know it already I can tell summer break is coming to a close by looking at how many teachers are parked in elementary school parking lots.  Enjoy the time we have left - we report on August 16 (August 13 for 200 day employees).

New Colleagues:

To date we have over 20 new colleagues starting in CHUH this year.  Please make them feel welcome and share what they need to be successful.  Most of them are coming to us with experience. Executive Board members have been invited to a new hire breakfast on Monday, August 13.  The TAP retreat this year is being held Wednesday, August 15 in the morning.

Summer Pay:

If the district sent you to training or you took part in district PD over this summer then you should be paid at $23/hr.  Keep track of your hours and check your pay stub to make sure you were paid.

OTES Change:

Senate Bill 216 was signed into law on August 3.  Thank you to all of you who called, wrote, and encouraged your local lawmakers to pass this bill.  Starting in fall 2019 Student Growth Measures (SGM) will no longer count as 50% of teacher evaluations!  This is not to say that SGM will not be part of the conversation during evaluation, but it means that state tests and SLOs will no longer show up in teacher evaluations.  There are many more parts of this 81 page law, but the change in evaluations is most significant to us.  More to come.

Tailgate:

August 24 is the first Heights home football game starting at 7 PM.  We are trying to organize a tailgate starting at 5:30. Please save the date.

Convocation:

As we begin a negotiations year it would be helpful to be able to show our cohesiveness.  Please wear a union shirt to convocation. If you need a T-shirt, we will supply you with one.  If you want to purchase our embroidered 50/50 polo shirt they are $20 - contact Monica at our office 216.321.0020.

In Union,

Ari Klein
CHTU President
