                                                                                                                                  June 7, 2012

To All CHTU Members:

UNION UPDATE

Glenn Altschuld Scholarship. In 1991 the CHTU Executive Board established a scholarship in honor of our past-president, Glenn Altschuld. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Heights High senior who has a record of outstanding academic performance and who desires to pursue a career in teaching. The recipient is selected by our high school Union stewards and officers. The winner of the 2012 Glenn Altschuld scholarship is Krsna-Jivani Ziyad. We presented the scholarship at the Senior Awards Night on May 30th. Congratulations, Krsna. We were able to award an $1,800.00 scholarship this year with the funds raised by our gift basket raffle at the Union banquet.  Thanks to all who contributed.

Summer Office Hours. The Union Office will be open all summer with the exception of the week of July 2nd through July 6th. Office hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We recommend appointments due to staff vacation schedules.

Retirees. Be sure to wish the best to our colleagues who are retiring and let them know that they are appreciated and will be missed. We congratulate our retirees listed below and thank them for their years of exceptional service to the students of the district and loyalty to our Union.

This Summer and Beyond. This summer will be a busy time at the Union Office.  Our Education Research & Dissemination (ER&D) classes begin June 11th, and we will be transitioning our new officers whose terms begin July 1. In addition, we have some unfinished business in the form of grievances yet to be resolved, the Race to the Top Letter of Understanding on the Teacher Evaluation pilot program that is required for 2012-2013, and preparing the bargaining poll for next fall as contract negotiations begin in March, 2013.

Looking long term, we will all need to be active in the upcoming November election campaigns. Don’t know if you caught it, but Mitt Romney was cited in an education policy interview stating that class size doesn’t matter. If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s the old axiom “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll stand for anything.” We were successful last year in standing together to repeal Senate Bill 5. We need to continue and intensify our member mobilization efforts for the challenges that lie ahead.

Pay Dates. The first payroll for the 2012-13 school year for teachers and 190-day employees has yet to be determined. However, if the current pattern continues, the first pay date will be September 7th. The teacher salary schedule can be viewed on the home page of our website at www.chtu.org . Click on “salary schedule”.

Ending the School Year.   As this school year draws to a close, be sure to reflect on your successes. In the big picture, assessment results, value added scores, and state report card ratings can never accurately measure the long-lasting impact you have had on the children we have instructed and nurtured. Your hard work and dedication are deserving of a relaxing and enjoyable summer.  Take the time to re-energize. August 30th will be here soon enough. Before you leave for the summer, be sure to say goodbye to colleagues, administrators and support staff. Take the time to wish your students well. They will remember.
