Negotiation Update - 3.6.17 Wages

Dear Colleagues,

We are trying to arrange a membership meeting for Monday March 20 or Tuesday, March 21 to vote on the tentative agreement was reached on Friday, March 3.  Our Executive Board will vote either to recommend or not recommend at our March 16 meeting.

The actual agreement is posted on our website for you to study.  http://chtu.oh.aft.org/negotations-2017/tentative-agreement-3317

Until then, we will be publishing about different sections of the agreement.  Today will be a short article on the raises.

What does 0%, 1.5%, 1.5% mean?

The raises in the tentative agreement were the best we felt we could do short of a strike.  Above all else it shows that competitive pay is not a priority of our Board of Education otherwise they would have planned differently.

A first year teacher at BA Step 1 makes $42,375 per year.  Advancing to step 2 then step 3 adding in the raises if this contract is ratified means that the teacher will be making $45,708 in the third year.  $3,333 more than this year.

A teacher on Step 14 at the BA20 lane makes $74,495 this year.  In three years the teacher is still at Step 14 making $76,747.  $2,252 more than this year.

A security monitor at step 5 currently makes $28.38 per hour.  At the end of the contract would be earning $29.24 per hour, 86 cents more per hour.

Our insurance plan improvements are costing us an additional $75/year single or $200/year family.  These premium hikes and improvements will go into place next school year.

When we vote to accept or reject the tentative agreement each member will need to look at the whole package.  If rejected then we start from scratch on everything.

In Union,

Ari Klein

CHTU President
