July 9, 2026 CHTU Summer Update
Dear 795 Members,
Summer is flying by, and this is the time of the year that you are carefree with family time, vacations or anything else that relaxes your soul. We have received some inquiries from members about required summer work. You are on summer recess and not under contract. . We have 192-day and 200 day contracts. We are contracted employees not year round employees subject to the whims of administration. Under no circumstances is any work outside of your 192-day or 200-day contract required. All work in the summer is voluntary and compensated.
We are sending this email on school mail because Google Contacts will only let us make so many updates a day to our lists!!!
Juneteenth
Summer School employees may notice they were not paid for the Juneteenth holiday. This is a clear violation of the negotiated holidays included in our 795 contract. When we followed up with administration, we were told that the district is “looking into the contract language with their legal team.” We filed a grievance on July 9, 2026.
RIF List Update
All but 3 of our members have been called back from the RIF list. Our social workers and one of our deans of students remain on the RIF list.
Notice to Negotiate
On June 25, 2026, we filed a notice to negotiate. The Board eliminated an Instructional Specialist (CEIS) position and created an EAPSE (Administrator Union)position called Coordinator of School Success. Based on the job descriptions, these positions are the same. Our subcontracting contract language specifies that if the work can be performed by one of our bargaining unit members, the position assigned to that work belongs in our bargaining unit. Any desired change by the administration is a mandatory subject of bargaining.
Out of Office AFT Convention
The AFT Convention will be held in Washington, D.C., this year. V.P. Underhile and President Rego will attend from July 15-19. Our office will be closed during that time and will have limited availability to communicate during the convention.
Summer Setup Pay
Secondary classroom teachers have up to 8 hours of classroom setup pay. Elementary schools have up to 24 hours of classroom setup pay. These hours are voluntary and compensated at the $25 per hour rate. The administrative assistant in your school's main office will have a form for you to sign to receive compensation. You can set up at any time during the summer up until your first day of work.
Last Pay/First Pay
Your last pay for the 25/26 school year is on August 14, 2025. The first pay of the 26/27 school year, which will include the negotiated 3.25% increase, will be on August 28, 2026.
In Solidarity,
Karen Rego
CHTU President
