CHTU Spring Social and 50/50

We are not doing basket raffles this year, but instead, we are holding a membership-wide 50/50 raffle. Proceeds from the raffle will go to the Glenn Altschuld Scholarship, which is awarded to Heights High students who plan on pursuing a career in education.  Tickets have been sent to building stewards for sale, and the cost is $5 for 6 tickets. Tickets will be sold between now and May 23. Tickets will also be sold at union lunches. The winner of the 50/50 raffle will be announced on Friday, May 26.

Safety Action

CHTU is pushing for major changes to ensure the safety of students and staff in our buildings.  To that end, one of our actions was to appear at the April 4 Board of Education meeting.  Our members showed up, and it was a standing room-only.  President Rego addressed the members of the Board, and as a result of this action, President Rego and Vice President Underhile have a meeting with Board President Beverly Wright and Superintendent Kirby.  We will be addressing several problems, which include weapons, drug use, fights, and responses to behavior by building administration.

Summit met on Friday, April 14.  At the meeting, the Summit team agreed that teachers are not expected to break up fights.  The responsibility of our non-CPI-trained staff is to attempt to stop a fight. Examples of these attempts would include stern, loud, yelling to get students to stop,  hitting your emergency button, calling for security or administration, and preventing students from escalating to a fight. At no time should you put your safety at risk to intervene.

Placements

Tentative assignments for the 2023-2024 school year were sent to you by Human Resources via email last week. There are several open positions that were posted as well. We believe that it is somewhat insulting to ask experienced teachers to “apply” for these positions, but that is the process the administration has in place. All open positions can be found on the HR section of the CHUH website.

In Union,

Karen Rego

CHTU President
