CHTU Update - May 22, 2014 Voter Bill of Rights

To All CHTU Members:

Ohio Voters Bill of Rights

We Need Your Help -Sign The Petition

You are probably aware of the recent battles over changes in the regulations governing voter registration, voting dates and times, and voter identification.  Recently enacted restrictions have placed an additional burden on voters and potential voters due to partisan politics in Ohio.

Several groups have coalesced to circulate petitions to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot for this November which would:

  • permit online voter registration
  • sets early in-person absentee  voting hours just prior to election day (no fewer than 12 hours during the weekend before Election Day and 10 hours each day during the week before Election Day)
  • places early voting hours and voter ID requirements in Ohio's Constitution

Given the dismal turnout in recent elections (less than 20% statewide in last week's voting), our elected officials should be doing whatever can be done to expand voting times and simplify the process.  Unfortunately, that's not happening.

We need close to 400,000 valid signatures by July to place this measure on the November, 2014 ballot. Your stewards and officers will be setting up times for signing the petitions in your buildings.

Please do so. Let us know if you are interested in circulating petitions among your family and friends.

Keep in mind that everything happening to us as educators (OTES, high stakes testing, flawed and inequitable school funding, attacks on collective bargaining) is a function of politics. Help us protect voting rights.

In Union,

Ari Klein
