Middle School 795 Members,
We received a response to our grievance on middle school discipline. Although we believe things are moving in the right direction, we do not consider the grievance resolved at this time because we believe that you need to determine whether or not the plan (see below) that has been developed is working. We requested that administration to give us more time before moving the grievance to the next level until we had a chance to get your feedback. A plan was develop during the grievance meeting and a follow up meeting with administration around attendance in class. The plan is as follows:
Current school year and next school year.
- First period cutting class- TAP developed a plan that includes tracking the number of times students miss 1st period. The students will be assigned progressive discipline. Staff will vote on this.
- Class cutting 2nd-9th periods- 2 days a week administration will create a report that tracks students who were marked absent for some classes during the school day, but were present in other classes. The students will receive progressive discipline starting with lunch and after school detentions.
- ALC: -Students will be escorted to and from lunch and also out of the building every day. They will not be permitted to go to their lockers or walk around asking for classwork from all their teachers.
- Extra Security- 3 additional security guards have been assigned to sweep the halls and monitor behavior during transitions. Walkie-talkies were provided to a teacher in hallways where there are no offices.
2018-2019:
- Discuss the current schedule and transitions during the school day.
- Possible move of ALC room so it is out of a main hallway.
- Work with administration and discuss students who are multiple discipline offenders for an alternative leaning program, which may be offsite.
- Identify systematic PBIS practices.
Please know that I updated the Board of Education at their meeting last night on the plan for this school year. We will continue to keep the Board updated with our concerns and we let them know that we will monitor the middle school climate closely for improvement.
In Union,
Karen
