Dear Colleagues,
This past Friday, March 23, 2018 we gathered for the Spring Social at Nighttown. The food and music were great and the baskets provided by schools were creative and fantastic. We raised close to $1,400 for our Glenn Altschuld scholarship this year! Glenn served as president of our local from 1970 to his retirement in 1990. Thank you for donating and buying raffle tickets!
We honored Rox middle teacher Zakiyya Bergen and Canterbury teacher Julie Lustic with the Tom Schmida Teacher Leadership Award this year. Tom served as our immediate past president from 1990-2012. Both are long time teachers in our district that have had a huge impact both on colleagues and students.
We also honored 1st Vice President Karen Rego with the Ellen Krebs Award for distinguished service to students. Ellen Krebs was "the heart and soul of the union" in the 1960's before the CHTU was the bargaining agent for the teachers in the district. Karen was an outstanding steward at Oxford and has served as 1st vice-president of our local for the last two years. She knows how to get things done, learns quickly. and is a superb advocate for our members.
Three schools were honored for having the highest percentage of members contributing to COPE (Committee On Political Education - voluntary contributions for political work). Canterbury at 84% and Oxford at 70%. Fairfax was recognized for having the highest per person contributions at $1.59 per check. All other buildings were between $0.73 to $1.24.
We were happy to see that 4 of our 5 School Board members and Superintendent Dixon attended our event and enjoyed the company of our members.
Thanks to everyone who was able to attend.
In Union,
Ari Klein
CHTU President
