CHTU Update 9/20/2022

Dear Colleagues,

There are many important updates below.  Please take a minute to read through them.  Many new tutors have been hired. These members will receive packets welcoming them to Local 795 where they will have the opportunity to join our Union.

Board Docs

Have you ever gone to the district website and checked out BoardDocs? Among these important documents are agendas for all Board of Education meetings which can be found here   BoardDocs are updated the day of a Board meeting.  All our members should regularly check these documents since they contain so much important information.  So what’s in BoardDocs meeting agendas, and why should I be reading them?

The Personnel section is the section that will be of most interest to you.  In this section you can find:

  • Retirements/Resignations/Name changes
  • New Appointments - New hires both classified, certified and administrative are approved.  This section also is where supplemental contracts are approved.  If you haven’t been paid for your supplemental coaching or activity, you will need to wait until it’s Board approved.
  • Change in Salary - Once you complete and submit completed coursework that moves you to another education lane resulting in a pay increase, it will appear in this section. A majority of these are being approved at tonight’s Board meeting.
  • Change in Status - This section is for any current employee who changes positions within the district.

VESi
Ursuline College, and Virtual Education Software (VESi) have partnered with OFT to offer our members access to online courses available for graduate credit.  The subscription is $225 per year.  OFT members may take one course each term for a total of three courses each year (up to 9 credit hours per year).  These courses can be used to move up the salary scale and for license renewal.  To learn more, click this link.

Also through OFT and VESi, you and your family members can now earn associate degrees completely online for free.  Family members include you, your parents, children (or stepchildren), grandchildren (or step-grandchildren), spouses, domestic partners, financial dependents, sons and daughters-in-law, siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins!  Courses are developed in partnership with Eastern Gateway Community College, which is a public, non-profit school in the University System of Ohio, and is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.  To learn more, click this link.

Tenure
Do you expect to be eligible for a continuing contract (tenure) this year by completing coursework before March 20?Let your supervisor know, even if all of the official transcripts of your coursework won't be available until after March 20th. There is no application to fill out - you are eligible or not eligible. Need to check requirements?  Look at the last question on our general FAQ (link here)

Student Debt Clinic
Tomorrow, September 21, CHTU is hosting a Student-Debt Clinic from 4:00 - 5:00 pm with Jill Jones from OFT.  If you have not signed up, you can still attend this free clinic.  Use this Zoom link.

Retirement
If you are eligible to retire this year through STRS please contact our office or email krego@chtu.org to make an appointment to talk through the retirement process and prepare paperwork. To read more about retirement click here on the CHTU FAQ page.

If you have worked  in the district for at least 10 years and are eligible to retire h under STRS or SERS you would be eligible for the $24,000 incentive as long as your retirement letter is in by March 1.

For members who are retiring with 10 years or more service in CHUH:  Your severance pay is based on your accumulation of sick leave (1/4 of up to 360 days; plus 1/8 of 361-440 accumulated sick days). Divide your sick leave hours by 7.5 and then divide by 4. The result is your number of days for which you will be paid. Multiply that number times your daily rate of pay (gross salary divided by 190). In addition, any remaining personal days cash in at your full daily rate.

For members who are retiring with fewer than 10 years service in CHUH, but with at least 10 years of state government service:  Your severance pay is 1/4 of up to 120 sick days.  In other words, the maximum severance is 30 days.

In Solidarity,

Karen Rego
CHTU President
