CHTU Update - April 15, 2015

Dear Colleagues,
Three names were missing from the Board approved tenure list.  These three teachers (and perhaps one more) will be approved by the board and invited to the May 5 tenure tea celebrating their continuing contract status.  Congratulations to: Karl Neitzel, John Powaski, and Rick Wiggins.  My apologies for misspelling TeKara Ray's name.

Vice President Schaner and I met with administration this week to discuss staffing for next year.  Although we are sworn to secrecy (don't even ask) I can relate that it appears that the district is trying to minimize any cuts in staffing.  Of course, we are not satisfied with any cuts at all and were able to help brainstorm some ways to save some jobs.  Even so, the reduction list is very small. Assignments are expected to come out on April 24 so it is likely that there will be more changes as things become finalized.

As if you didn't have enough to do, I am going to suggest three evening activities you might consider attending.

April 15:  Don't miss the Reaching Heights Spelling Bee tonight at 7 PM at the high school.  It is great fun and a super fundraiser for Reaching Heights.  Help cheer on our team; Kennethian Brown, Amy Statler, and Abi Adeyemon.  I will not be on the team, see item #1 above.

April 21: Board Work Session on Testing (after they talk about about facilities and discuss a secondary math adoption).  Should be interesting, but I do not believe there will be public comment.  Starts at 7 PM at the Board office.

April 24:  Heights Community Congress presents :Redlining and School Ratings: An Interactive Community Forum" at 7 PM at the Cleveland Heights Main Library (complimentary refreshments at 6).  Reservations appreciated.  Link here to RSVP  HCC is a great community partner and the forum should be very interesting if you think about how school report cards sway where people choose to live.

Stay strong and focused through our next set of exams.  Perhaps, with help, they will go away.
In Solidarity,
Ari Klein
CHTU President
